Well, that was frustrating

They see the social and verbal deficiencies and tendencies we see, but because what we are doing at home is meeting his educational needs, he does not qualify for additional educational support through the district. It is frustrating to know that, were I a less competent parent, they would help him.

Now to figure out what to do next.

I wish I could say I was surprised...

When they evaluated Sarah, they required premature children to have developmental delays greater than 12 months in 2 or more areas. Sarah was only delayed 6 to 11 months in each area, so she did not qualify for help. It was very frustrating.

Sadly, this isn't a surprise. This stuff happens all the time. You are right though, a child with less involved parents would get help. Isn't the system wonderful?

A second opinion is in order.

Gretchen - I am so sorry that they are not affording you the support that you need right now! Good job on working with Charlie, though. I was so happy to read about him reading the books the other day. It was exciting to me! You and Dowlan really are amazing parents and your children are blessed to be in your care!

I'm so sorry they are not able/willing to provide more services. Based on what you told me you are doing, I think you are probably providing better services than they might provide. Have you talked with Katie Baine at church? She might could help you some also.
