Bad Mr. Bad

Charlie has nicknamed himself Bad Mr. Bad. This would be funny did he not think it true. Every time you say something positive about Charlie, he gets furious and shouts, "I'm a bad stupid kid!"

I don't know what to do with this one, guys. My instinct is to assure him that he is precious and loved, but it just makes him more and more angry.

remind him that what he does may be bad, but he is still good and loved, oma

That's hard. You can't really ignore it (or can you?) but you don't want to upset him even further by arguing with him. Is there a way to reward the things that he does but not him? For example, "that's a great picture" instead of "Charlie you did a great job drawing that cat". Something along those lines?

Hugs! This is a tough one!

OMG! Gretchen - I left a comment under another post about how similar Charlie is to my ds Aaron. I just found your blog from a link on FB today and am reading your journey. This is a problem that we encounter constantly with Aaron. He is constantly saying that he's stupid, can't do anything right, no one loves him, etc. Kids on the spectrum usually do have low self esteems. Aaron is now 7 and it kills me every time he says something like this. I always respond with "I'm sorry you feel that way, but I love you and I don't think you're (fill in the blank)". Just wanted to add a small suggestion.
